The Learning Center's Annex

private instruction of accredited curriculum for high school students

The Learning Center's Annex offers tomorrow’s credits today.
Program Background
Fiscal setbacks in our public school system are increasing class sizes and reducing contact time between students and their instructors. The reduction in contact time makes already challenging classes even more difficult, and students are no longer guaranteed strong foundations in key academic disciplines. The Learning Center's Annex evolved to provide our community with a new option, one that meets the individual needs of high school students. The Learning Center's Annex offers private instruction of accredited high school and college courses. The Annex program is an affiliate of the Learning Center, Inc., a private tutoring facility located in Eugene, Oregon. The Learning Center has been in business since 1989, providing college students with one-on-one tutoring and academic counseling. Tutors hold degrees and are trained to accommodate different learning styles and abilities. The Learning Center and the Learning Center's Annex share the same facility and tutoring staff. Conventional tutoring services are available through the Center, and the accredited high school and college courses are offered through the Annex.

Annex Course Offerings

Credits earned through the Annex can transfer to a home high school and record on a student’s transcript. The Annex also offers classes that count as both high school and college credit, often referred to as "double dip". Students enrolled in a double dip course can circumvent the stressful end-of-the-year Advanced Placement exams. The transfer credits earned at the Annex work as AP credits do and can replace projected classes for a student’s freshman college year.

The curriculum offered through the Annex spans a breadth of disciplines taught in local high schools: English, mathematics, writing, personal health, history, foreign language, biology, chemistry, and physics. Classes are available for students in grades nine through twelve. Contact the Program Director at the Annex for a complete list of classes and course descriptions.

Inquiries about curriculum and services are fielded by the Program Director at (541) 968-6502. The Annex offers rolling registration, and students may begin study after an initial conference and receipt of curriculum materials. Enrollment is limited, and priority is given to previously enrolled students.

Fees and Timelines

In order to enroll in course work at the Annex, a student shall pay fees that cover course enrollment and tutoring. Students are required to purchase two textbooks: one for the student and one for the tutor to use during the quarter.

Students working on one class typically commit to three hours a week with a tutor. The student’s pace will be determined by both a timeline agreement with the tutor and the student’s ability to work independently on homework. In most cases one class is completed in three to four months; however, a class may be completed in as little as one month. The maximum time allotted for course completion is twelve months. Students will receive their class grade and transfer credits three weeks after the final exam is administered.
